Hello, my name is Joel Arthur, the Academic Skills Coordinator here at the SALT Center. After receiving a Bachelor’s degree from the U of A, majoring in Eng. Lit. and Cr. Writing, I began tutoring reading and writing comprehension at the center while I completed a Master’s of Fine Arts degree in Poetry. The center’s student-oriented programming emphasizes a unique perspective on educating that fits right in with my excitement to increase knowledge retention skills.
As the supervisor of the Writer’s Lab and Math/Science Lab, I am committed to facilitating productive tutoring sessions that will guide students toward academic independence. Equally promising is the opportunity to prepare seminars and tutorials that will provide approaches to tutoring and self-educating, ranging from topics such as how to tutor various learning styles (Auditory, Visual, Kinesthetic, Global, Sequential, etc.) to informing students how to research effectively.
A Tucson resident of 6 years, I enjoy eating at our city’s hidden gems, from Ethiopian to Guatemalan to Vietnamese dining. I'm also a regular at our local art-house theatre, the Loft Cinema. Their free monthly screenings of essential cinema is a must! When I'm not eating or viewing, books and notepads can be found around me. Aside from these activities and the occasional trips to tranquil Mt. Lemmon, my time is spent acquiring the techniques needed to encourage the proactive pursuit of one’s interest.
