Technology
SALT students have exclusive access to our Computer Resource Lab (CRL), which is equipped with up-to-date software packages and assistive technologies.
This is another important part of SALT's overall academic support plan.
Computer Resource Lab (CRL)
Hours:
Monday - Thursday 8:00 am - 8:00 pm
Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.
The CRL environment minimizes distractions so that students can stay focused while using the computers. The design of the lab enables SALT students to sit side by side with
their tutors to work on research projects or study.
A full-time Support Systems Analyst provides training and assistance to SALT students in the use of computers, assistive technology, and other software.
Assistive Technology (AT)
What is Assistive Technology (AT)? This term can be loosely
interpreted to mean any kind of technology that assists a student
with learning challenges in achieving their academic goals.
The SALT Center provides AT software that SALT students can use to increase their productivity while researching, studying, and writing.
Understanding why programs such as Kurzweil 3000 are necessary for some students requires the acknowledgment that many students are unable to study effectively by conventional means (reading textbooks, organizing their thoughts for a paper, etc.).
AT programs can enhance visual stimulation, aural stimulation, or both to increase the effectiveness of study sessions. The programs can be strategically used in different combinations depending upon the learning strengths and weaknesses of each student. When applied properly, these AT programs can make a world of difference.
SALT Strategic Learning Specialists are trained to guide
students towards applicable AT software.
SALT also employs a full-time Support Systems Analyst to assist students with learning how to use the programs.
