Policies
SALT strives to provide tutors for all courses, however, we cannot guarantee the availability of tutors for all courses.
Tutors do not help with take home tests, papers or quizzes; help with online tests or quizzes;
lend or give students work to copy or turn in; do homework for students; or write or type papers for students.
It is important that students come prepare for their tutoring session.
When a student accrues three no shows, the computer system will temporarily lock him or her out until the student attends an appointment with the Tutor Coordinator.
Conferences are intended to discuss any concerns or issues that may be causing difficulty in the tutoring sessions as well as reinforcing the importance of promptness and attendance at all scheduled appointments.
Writer's Lab
Our Mission
Our mission is to help students with learning and/or attention challenges to discover and develop their critical thinking strengths and then to use these abilities to create their own productive writing strategies.
Our Philosophy
Our writing tutors believe that student writers need to be able to think carefully and constructively about their writing in order to succeed. Our conferences with students focus on guiding writers to make thoughtful choices about what their purpose is for a project, and how to best convey that message to their particular audience. Students learn to recognize how word choice, tone, format, content, and focus affect the success of their written texts.
In addition, the writing tutors understand that not all students compose best in traditional ways. As such, we introduce students to a wide variety of composing methods, demonstrating how to use visual, auditory, and kinesthetic modes to begin, develop, and refine a piece of writing. We work to draw out the diverse intellectual skills of students whose learning and communication styles may be non-traditional.
Our Approach
Our writing tutors support students as they develop their own writing strategies, specific to their needs and strengths, as they work on actual writing projects. This type of tutor-student dialogue helps students to see the expectations of their projects, and to balance those with the demands of their knowledge, abilities, and weaknesses.

For students participating in Upper Level services, tutoring charges are $19 per hour. Charges will automatically be billed to your University account under the description of SALT TUTORING FEES mid-semester and after finals. You will not receive a notice from SALT. It is your responsibility to check your balance at the Bursars Office. Please note that failure to pay SALT fees and other university charges could result in cancellation of registration or other University action. For any questions and/or clarification of these charges, please see SALT's Assistant Director, Finance and Information Systems, Rm 310, or call her at 626-8304.
